Letter to Health Canada on Marketing to Kids

On June 13, 2023 First Call submitted a letter to Health Canada recommending changes to current policy proposals for regulations that will restrict the advertising to children of “Prescribed Foods Sodium, Sugars and Saturated Fat.” First Call is a long-time member of the Stop Marketing to Kids Coalition.

While we appreciate that current proposals contain clear information on the negative health impacts of advertising unhealthy foods to children and youth, we think there is room for improvement.

Our recommendations include

  • Ensure draft regulations restrict point-of-sale advertising, in addition to proposed TV and digital restrictions, and
  • Ensure draft regulations are consistent with Health Canada’s December 2018 M2K [Marketing to Kids] guidance document and international best practices.
