Supporting Gender Diversity and Expression in BC Schools

September 2014

This letter to BC school board trustees noted that, as of September 2014, First Call has partnered with the BC Safer Schools Coalition to support school board policies that:

  • Explicitly protect students, staff and families from harassment based on all forms of oppression, including homophobia and transphobia
  • Encourage curriculum, resources and accommodations that foster dignity and respect across all differences, including sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression
  • Require professional development opportunities for educational leaders and school staff to implement policies, deliver curriculum and support students re: the above policies

Results of the 2011 Climate Survey on Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia in Canadian Schools (a survey of 3,700 students across Canada) found that “the climate in Canadian schools is unsafe for many students and that action is needed.”

First Call urged trustees to heed the coalition’s recommendations by adopting and implementing strong school board policies that support students with diverse gender identities and expressions
