On September 28, 2018, First Call submitted recommendations to The Advisory Council on the Implementation of a National Pharmacare Program. The submission recognizes that socioeconomic position is one of the most important social
determinants of health.
Our submission highlights five recommendations:
Recommendation 1: Implement a national pharmacare program with a high-level focus on improving the lives and long-term health outcomes of children, youth and their families who are living in poverty.
Recommendation 2: Ensure the pharmacare program is public, universal, equitable and portable.
Recommendation 3: Ensure a national pharmacare program is accessible and offered without barriers to all Canadians.
Recommendation 4: A national pharmacare program should ensure medically necessary prescriptions are covered for all Canadians.
Recommendation 5: Fund a national pharmacare program from savings, efficiencies and fair taxation.
