On October 24, 2017, First Call: BC Child and Youth Advocacy Coalition worked closely with the Vancouver Foundation’s Fostering Change Initiative to bring youth in and from foster/government care, and their allies from around the province, to Victoria for a full day of policy action.
The October 24 Policy Solutions Day was a great success, well-attended by MLAs and covered by more than 50 different media outlets across BC—an important first step in the fostering change work First Call will continue for the next two years. Here’s some of what we wrote in our final report on the day:
October 24th was an opportunity to engage with policy makers in a way that extends outside of the traditional youth advisory circles or small-scale change that happens on an MCFD level. Through presentations and workshops to community members across BC, youth learned about the public policy process, and how they can bring their advocacy to engage with it.
For many youth, this was their first rally and opportunity to speak to MLAs or be in Victoria. Some youth visited the parliamentary gallery and witnessed Minister [of Children and Family Development Katrine] Conroy introduce our group in session.
