MCFD Response to First Call Letter urging action on Child Care commitments

January 2018

On November 1, 2017, First Call’s Early Childhood Development Roundtable sent a letter to the Honourable Katrine Conroy, Minister of Children and Family Development, and Andrew Weaver, leader of the BC Green Party, to express concern that their commitment to child care was not reflected in the September 2017 budget update, and urged both parties to take action toward implementation of a universal child care system with the February 2018 provincial budget.

Minister Conroy and the Honourable Katrina Chen, Minister of State for Child Care, have replied to note that more details regarding the new provincial child care plan will be revealed in the February 2018 budget:

As you know, our new government is committed to implementing an accessible and affordable child care system. As you can imagine, implementing an all encompassing child care plan is a complex process that requires collaboration with all partners, including the Green Party. We are also talking to key stakeholders, including child care advocates like First Call, Indigenous stakeholders, as well as child care providers, educators, parents, and local governments to determine the best path forward.
