First Call to Premier and Health Minister: Ban Sale of Flavoured Tobacco Products to Minors

May 2014

In this letter to Premier Clark and Health Minister Terry Lake, the First Call coalition called the targeted marketing of flavoured tobacco products to children and youth an “unconscionable” tactic that “must be stopped immediately.”

Cigars, cigarillos, water pipes and chew tobacco are now available in an increasingly popular variety of fruit and candy flavours that mask the harsh flavour of tobacco and make it easier for youth to become addicted to nicotine. The Canadian Cancer Society, for example, has found that 53% of youth who smoke (an estimated 35,000 individuals in BC) report using flavoured tobacco products.
