Canadian Poverty Reduction Strategy – First Call Letter to BC MPs

On July 11 2017, First Call sent a letter to the BC Members of Parliament to accompany our formal submission on the Canadian Poverty Reduction Strategy (CPRS). The letter outlines the call for a CPRS that has targets and timelines secured in legislation, specifically:

  1. To reduce Canada’s child and poverty rate by 50% between 2017 and 2020, and
  2. To reduce Canada’s poverty rate by 75% within a decade.

An excerpt from the letter reads:

“A successful strategy will acknowledge and seek to eliminate the deepest poverty in Canada—that which disproportionately affects female lone-parent households, Indigenous people, people with disabilities, youth in and from government care, recent immigrants, and racialized people.”
