First Call is proud of what our coalition has accomplished in 2017.
From holding government to account for BC’s child poverty crisis to amplifying the voices of foster youth, together we’ve done some amazing work to put BC’s children and youth first.
Here are highlights of key successes, victories, communications and outreach in 2017.
WE DOCUMENTED BC’S CHILD & FAMILY POVERTY CRISIS
Our 2017 BC Child Poverty Report Card highlighted the growing income inequality that still has one in five of our kids living in poverty, and our shared failure to properly support families of every type. Take action at still1in5.ca
POLICY PROGRESS: POVERTY REDUCTION STRATEGY!
For years our main recommendation has been for the adoption of a provincial poverty reduction plan. BC’s new government has now promised a plan and begun province-wide consultations. still1in5.ca/recommendations
VANCOUVER CERTIFIED AS A LIVING WAGE EMPLOYER
The City of Vancouver was finally certified as a Living Wage Employer this year! The Living Wage for Families Campaign was also active before and after the provincial election, bringing low-wage workers’ and progressive employers’ voices to the fore. livingwageforfamilies.ca
WE GOT CHILDREN AND YOUTH ON THE ELECTION AGENDA
Our Provincial Election Toolkit was used by members around BC to raise issues affecting children and youth with parties and candidates. firstcallbc.org/election
WE BROUGHT YOUTH VOICES TO THE BC LEGISLATURE
Working with the Vancouver Foundation and many partners, we brought 60 former youth in foster care together with 24 MLAs to discuss child welfare policy, and gathered more than 200 supporters for a rally at the Legislature to raise awareness of the need for better transition supports for youth leaving care at 19. Our podcast As Word Spreads gave youth from care a new way to share their knowledge and views. firstcallbc.org/fosteringchange and soundcloud.com/aswordspreads
WE CELEBRATED OUR WORK IN THE CHILD AND YOUTH SECTOR
Our successful 2017 fundraising gala celebrated our collective work to put children and youth first and honoured former Representative for Children & Youth Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond for her leadership and advocacy. Join us at our 2018 gala on Feb. 1 for an evening with Grand Chief Ed John and First Call friends and supporters. firstcallbc.org/gala
