First Call’s municipal election toolkit is meant to support individuals and community groups in their advocacy for legislation, policy and practice that benefit children and youth and their families in the lead-up to the November 19, 2011, municipal elections.
The toolkit is structured around the 4 Keys to Success. Each section highlights some of the current issues facing children, youth and families in BC, the role of the municipal government and suggests solutions government can act on, in the form of questions to candidates.
The Living Wage for Families Campaign, along with 54 organizations representing over 300,000 people, sent an open letter to all Metro Vancouver candidates and parties running for municipal council and school board asking them to commit that, if elected, they will adopt a living wage policy that ensures that all staff and contracted workers are paid a living wage. The response was very positive, with well over 100 candidates responding that they would either support a living wage policy if elected or at least investigate the matter further. Find full details of all candidates’ responses.
