We Are Here: Women’s Experiences of the Barriers to Reporting Sexual Assault

West Coast LEAF’s newest law reform report focuses on why sexual assault survivors often do not report through the criminal justice system. The report represents the voices of women who have experienced the devastating impacts of sexual assault. They found key factors that deterred women from reporting sexual assault to the police, including attitudes that minimize, blame, and shame, survivors’ beliefs and values about the justice system, conduct of people working in the criminal justice system, negative personal repercussions, and concerns about the criminal justice system process.
