Research to Practice Network: Mental Health Literacy and Community Social Service Practice

The Research to Practice Network is a collection of academics and researchers working in collaborative partnership with The Federation of Community Social Services of BC to provide practitioners with insight into emerging research in the field of child and family practice. They recently released an article by Patty Ranahan from Concordia University to discuss mental health literacy and community social service practice.

In the conclusion, she explained interviews she had with child and youth care practitioners who participated in a recent study exploring their initial encounters with young people who were suicidal. She found that mental health literacy is an essential component of community social service practice, and a health system focused only on memorization of symptoms may leave practitioners believing that they are unable to meet the needs of the children, youth, families and communities they serve.
