Promoting Mental Well-Being Through Social-Emotional Learning in Schools: Examples from British Columbia

This research points to the importance of school-led social and emotional learning in promoting positive mental health. The paper highlights the multi-faceted approach undertaken in British Columbia over the past decade to promote positive mental health through social-emotional learning (SEL) in schools. SEL has been implemented in school curriculum, recently in 2016-2017 for elementary schools, and in 2017-2018 for secondary schools. The study measured nine key teacher preparation programs across BC and found that all nine programs included courses that provided information and strategies for SEL. There remains a need for systemic change that requires dialogue and engagement with relevant stakeholders, including parents.
