Government of Canada Announces Removing Limits on Charities’ Political Activities

In August, the Government of Canada appealed an Ontario Superior Court decision that restricting political activities is a violation of the right to freedom of expression. This week, the government announced that it will “remove the limits on political activities for charities, so that they may pursue their charitable purposes by engaging in non-partisan political activities and in the development of public policy.”

This week’s announcement was applauded by many organizations, including Canada Without Poverty, a non-partisan charity dedicated to the relief of poverty, and Imagine Canada, a national charitable organization whose cause is Canada’s charities and non-profits.
