Alone at 19: What happens to youth who are aged out of Canada’s foster care system?

Last weekend, CTV W5 released their 25-minute special ‘Alone’ that features stories about the harrowing experience of youth aging out of foster care in BC. The special highlights the tragic story of Alex Gervais, who was taken into care when he was four-and-a-half years old. He lived in 17 different foster placements and was shuffled through 23 different social workers. At the very end, he was alone and jumped to his death, just eight months before his 19th birthday.

The special also interviews Adrienne Montani, our Provincial Coordinator, Dylan Cohen, past Fostering Change Campaign Organizer, and Kian Fernandez, Fostering Change Community Organizer. W5’s Sandie Rinaldo follows Fostering Change to Victoria for our 3rd Annual Policy Solutions Day and includes visuals from the 19th Birthday Party action last summer.
