2014 Fundraising Gala

2014 ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GALA

“History and Hope: the past, present and future impacts of government legislation and policy on the rights and well-being of Indigenous children and families in BC.”

Thank you for joining us at our annual fundraising gala on February 6, 2014. The gala was a wonderful success with more than 300 people in attendance. As we are a small staff and the coalition spans a vast geography, it was very inspiring to see and feel the diversity, intelligence, compassion and commitment that make up the First Call coalition and our allies. It is so very important to gather together and celebrate our successes, and as a result of the evening we are moving forward with renewed energy, knowing that our work is being recognized and supported!

Thank you to our keynote speaker Grand Chief Stewart Phillip

Gala Grand Chief Stewart Phillip and WifeWe were incredibly honoured that Grand Chief Stewart Phillip joined us as the keynote speaker. He shared his insights about “History and Hope: the past, present and future impacts of government legislation and policy on the rights and well-being of Indigenous children and families in BC.”

Grand Chief Stewart Phillip served as the chief of the Penticton Indian Band for 14 years and as an elected band councillor for 10 years. He continues to serve as the chair of the Okanagan Nation Alliance and is proud to be in his fifth three-year term as the president of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs. Grand Chief Phillip has been married for 27 years to his wife Joan. They have four grown sons, two daughters, six granddaughters and seven grandsons.

The Champion of Child and Youth Rights Award

Gala Steve KerstetterGala Allan KerstetterMany of you will know that last year we lost a wonderful friend and volunteer supporter, Steve Kerstetter. Steve worked for years on producing First Call’s Child Poverty Report Card and many other research pieces as part of his deep commitment to eliminating poverty and making life better for BC’s children. We are mourning his loss, and will miss his wise advice, his sense of humour and the passion for justice he shared with us. Steve was the recipient of this year’s Champion of Child and Youth Rights Award, and his son Allan accepted the award on his father’s behalf.
