With a week remaining until the May 9, 2017, provincial election, First Call and more than 60 other groups throughout the province have published an open letter urging candidates to address steadily worsening barriers to accessing income assistance here in British Columbia.
In February this year, the Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation introduced a new, more complicated version of the income assistance application process. Applicants without both computer access and literacy are unable to complete the application process, which has prompted a flood of calls and emails of distress.
Among other things, the letter asks candidates to commit to speaking in support of timely, in-person individualized assistance to applicants who need it.
